Tax Day Tea Party Protests - April 15, 2009 Nationwide
The 800+ nationwide Tax Day Tea
Party protests on April 15, 2009 were an amazing success. These ranged from
small towns to major cities where many thousands of Americans
participated. One preliminary estimate of the national turnout is already
600,000+, and is still being tallied.
Our Surge by State
feature also lists planned and prior protests as well as other resources
by state. Other information sources are also listed below. This list of protests is still expanding.
Some reports claimed 900+ or even 2300+ protests nationwide, but we have only
confirmed 845 so far.
Tea Party news- see Glenn Beck's show on May 1
with many participants about the Tax Day Tea Parties. This was a
fairly good sample of Tea Party enthusiasts from around the country.
We are tabulating a nationwide
estimate of the Tax Day Tea Party crowds . Please
e-mail your most reliable crowd estimates for whatever event you
attended. Links to published photos or videos which substantiate the
crowd estimates are welcome - but please do not email the actual photos
or videos to us. Just help us to share the image links as we
prepare for future protests.
We encourage support of
Memorial Day celebrations (not protests) to honor those
individuals who have bravely defended our Constitution and the
principles and values by which this country has become uniquely
successful in this competitive and dangerous world. That should
fit the basic "Silent No More" theme of standing up for what we firmly
believe, rather than attacking those who are now trying to change our
country beyond the limits of our Constitution.
On the other hand, it is time to encourage the early
"selection out" of many politicians for actions which are harmful to
our country from a conservative perspective. In that context, we
are now accepting nominations for the bipartisan 2009 Specious American Politician Awards.
Scroll down for
the links to the websites or Facebook event pages for the local
organizers. There are now so many protests that we are still in the
process of updating the list and links below.
We have identified 845 protests on April 15 so far,
and our research list below is not yet complete. This just
includes the April 15 protests - and there have been dozens of other
large protests already in many cities, plus many are being planned for
future dates such as July 4, plus
Memorial Day or
Flag Day (June
14) celebrations.
Don't forget to
prepare for July 4, when more Tea Party
protests are planned.
More details and links about the April 15 event plans
will be shared below as they become available.
Please let us know if you are aware of events which are not yet
listed below. Take the initiative and organize a Tea Party
again in your own
community on July 4. Spread the word!
Thanks to the Heritage Foundation for calling to our
attention this
Washington Post graphic about the enormous projected budget deficits
for the next decade relative to the Bush years. If you are
wondering what all these Tea Parties are about, this simple graphic is
one
good starting point. Keep in mind that the budget reality may
actually be even worse than these initial projections, and the impact of
the deficits is cumulative. The national debt projections
for the next decade are
therefore staggering.
The
theme of the nationwide Tax Day Tea Party protests is: "Repeal the
Pork - Cut Taxes".
See photos, videos, news coverage and other links from
the nationwide "Chicago
Tea Party" protests on February 27. These events were
locally organized in more than 40 cities in less than one week through
online social networking, and attracted over 15,000 people. See
background about the Tea Party movement,
including prior event links and how this got started.
Will liberal activists, such as those tied
to the DNC and Organizing for America,
try to disrupt the Tax Day Tea Party protests? It's quite
possible. Participants should be prepared to treat them
respectfully and avoid confrontations despite provocation. If they
try to create a scene for any news media in attendance, don't take the
bait. Politely ask the police to help avoid a public disturbance
by having any such antagonists gather separately for any
counter-demonstration which they may wish to organize, while we remain
peaceful and disciplined rather than confrontational. Do not let
provacateurs become the story, even though liberal media may be drawn to
such agitators. Isolate them from the main crowd of peaceful
demonstrators so that they are visibly irrelevant. Keep in mind
that these are not anti-Obama or pro-Republican events. Focus on
the real issues which are of concern to Republicans, independents,
Libertarians and even many Democrats these days.
Michelle Malkin's
blog on April 6 about recent criticism of the Tea Party movement
included a useful
national map of Tax Day Tea Party protests. Her
April 7 blog describes counter-demonstration plans by various
liberal groups, including some plans for April 11 to try to divert media
attention.
Fox News is showing increased interest in the Tax
Day Tea Party events. Bill Hemmer (America's Newsroom show with
Megyn Kelly on April 6) challenged Bob Beckel (Democratic strategist)
when he tried to denigrate the Tea Party movement as being led by the
"same old" groups which have organized tax day protests in prior years,
which is absolutely false. Beckel obviously has not checked
his facts, and asserts that these protests are of no consequence.
Let's prove him wrong!
Neil Cavuto of Fox News may report on the Tax Day
Tea Party protest in Sacramento, CA on April 15.
Sean Hannity (The Sean Hannity Show)
has announced on Fox News that he is going to do his April 15 broadcast
from Atlanta, which should help to promote attendance at the Tax Day Tea
Party. He has also invited video clips of the Tea Party events.
He has set up an
informational page about the Tax Day Tea Party protests, which
complements the various others out there already.

The
theme of the nationwide Tax Day Tea Party protests will be: "Repeal the
Pork - Cut Taxes".
Note
that these events are not limited to major cities or state capitols.
Anybody can volunteer to organize them in their community, but they
should follow the common theme and schedule as part of the nationwide
"Tea Party" movement.
The choice of venue and
timing (and any necessary permit arrangements) will be handled locally.
Some of the April 15 protests will be held near major Post Office
locations.
These events have been developed locally through online networking among
conservative Americans (not just Republicans) who were very concerned
about the recent "stimulus" bill, thousands of pork earmark projects in
the budget, and many other recent initiatives of the new Congress and
Obama administration. Attendees included some Democrats with
"buyers remorse" already, because this spending was not the change which
they believed in, or were expecting to occur.
