This
page shares photos from the Chicago Tax Day Tea Party on April 15, 2009
and also links to other news reports, videos, and
blogs which covered the protest. Crowd estimates have varied
between 6,000 and 10,000, but the bottom line is that a larger venue may
be needed next time. The Federal Plaza was nearly packed to
capacity, so that it was difficult to keep the building entrances and
sidewalks clear.
The crowd was very enthusiastic
but also very well-behaved, and left the Federal Plaza clean.
Speakers included WLS 890 talk radio host
Erich "Mancow" Muller as well as
Jonathan Hoenig
and others.

Chicago Young Republicans - Tax Day
Tea Party at Navy Pier
The
Chicago Young Republicans held a separate Tea Party
event at Navy Pier after work, which probably attracted about 250 people, with 150
on the Tall Ship "Windy" for the tea-tossing ceremony and speeches
by various Republican politicians talking to their supporters, including
Andy McKenna. Contrast that to the Federal Plaza - which was about
thousands of individuals telling their politicians what they think.
Did
Obama read the sign? "Do not touch the pirates". Sounds like
his Somalia policy.
All
the local TV news crews were invited to see a few "Tea" boxes tossed
overboard.
Other reports
about the Chicago Tax Day Tea Party
The Chicago Tribune reported on various Tax Day Tea Parties in the
Chicago region
Founding Bloggers posted some photos from the Chicago,
IL
Tax Day Tea Party as well as a video which exposed how the CNN
reporter was confronted by members of the crowd about biased coverage.
April
16, 2009 - Sean Hannity had this follow-up segment, including the biased
CNN coverage in Chicago.
At the Chicago Tax Day Tea
Party we didn't really expect objective CNN coverage, and we
certainly didn't get it. Note that the reporter in the clip below,
after badgering the attendee and talking over his attempt to answer her
question, went on to allege that this was all some sort of right wing
conspiracy cooked up by Fox News - even though in Chicago, Fox News had
no involvement in the protest preparations. It just tried to cover
the story - as did the local CBS and WGN News, and CLTV. If NBC
was there at all, it wasn't obvious.
Instead of reporting
objectively about the event like a professional journalist, this
reporter was just trying to create her own story by selectively baiting
people until the very respectful crowd got fed up with it. Note
that although Fox News got involved in several of the Tea Parties in
other cities, that was after they had already been organized and were
becoming a pretty significant story. Their coverage was useful,
but all other networks were equally free to pay attention.
