As we did for the April 15 Tax Day Tea Parties, we will try to gather reliable 4th of July Tea Party crowd estimates and Tea Party news (links to news reports, blog coverage, videos, photos).  We welcome reports with such links so that we may openly share them, but please don't email the original photos or videos to us.  Given the hundreds of events and hundreds of thousands of participants, that quickly becomes overwhelming.  Thanks for your patience!
July 4th Tea Party crowd report links will be added here - see also Tea Party News
July 1, 2009 Berman Post blog - Times Square, NYC Tea Party protest - report, photos - crowd estimated at 600 - 700, with some claiming 1000+
Prior Tea Party crowd estimates - April 15 Tax Day Tea Parties - see table below by city
Tea Party news - see Glenn Beck's show on May 1 with many participants about the Tax Day Tea Parties.  This was a fairly good sample of Tea Party enthusiasts from around the country.
Wow!  We gathered crowd estimates from many sources for the April 15 Tax Day Tea Party protests nationwide.  Thank you for your patience and assistance as we documented this historic event while preparing for future rallies (Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, and 9/12/09 in DC).

We have also offered suggestions for "Restoring A Limited Federal Government" as Republican politicians launch their own "National Council for a New America" and "Resurgent Republic" initiatives.  See "Tea Party Tactics" for our local action suggestions.

Scroll down to our latest tally of the total attendance at the Tax Day Tea Parties.  After review of reports from 510 Tea Parties out of 845 we have identified so far, the estimated national turnout added up to roughly 520,000 - 700,000+.  These estimates already include many of the largest Tea Party protests, but the final total seems very likely to have been in the 600,000 - 800,000 range.

One of the original Nationwide Tea Party Coalition organizers asserted in an April 24 interview that their latest tallies show 1 - 1.2 million total turnout on April 15 at 900+ protests.  This was based on 940,000 counted with 150 protests not yet included in the total.  A separate tally at Free Republic reported 904 Tea Parties and 780,000 - 917.000 attendees (also not yet a final total).  One of the other national Tax Day Tea Party organizers had estimated 750,000+ in a radio interview early on April 16.  In any case, it was an amazing turnout.  Thanks, everybody!

Whatever the most reliable final estimates may be, this completely blows away the number of loyal "pledges" of support for Obama's budget plan which were gathered by the DNC and Organizing for America in late March 2009 to pressure members of Congress.  Contrary to press reports which had asserted 642,000 signed pledges were delivered to members of Congress from that effort, it turns out that the real total was only 214,000 pledges - with 3 copies of each delivered (1 to the relevant member of Congress and 2 to the Senators.

By contrast, the Tea Parties got far more Americans to actually take the time to go to these protests and make their own views heard, instead of just signing a vague pledge of loyalty like a blank check for anything in Obama's budget to support his healthcare, education, and energy / environmental agenda.

The highly touted Obama campaign e-mail list of 13+ million supporters only generated 114,000 such pledges, despite his personal video, radio statement, and other DNC publicity promoting the pledge drive, and the OFA network of community activists then gathered a further 100,000 pledges personally.

There are literally thousands of news reports, blog posts, e-mails, and other sources to check.

Pajamas TV quickly estimated the national turnout at 225,000+, but this was still very preliminary on the evening of April 15.  By early afternoon on April 16, their total was over 280,000.  By 8pm on April 18, as more cities were reported, their incomplete total was already up to nearly 640,000.

RedState has published some very useful reports of estimates of Tax Day Tea Party crowds, with many links to local news reports.  Some news media underestimated the crowds - whether as very conservative journalistic estimates, political bias, or the result of showing up and leaving too early.  It was hard to compile reliable counts in some locations where events lasted longer, so that people came and went during the festivities.  After all, many people soon had to go back to work!

See Michelle Malkin's blog post - Massive: Tax Day Tea Party USA with many photos / videos.

American Conservative Daily has also published many crowd estimates.

FiveThirtyEight has also published many of the estimates, but generally downplayed them.  See the comments by Dan Gainor about this in his Fox Forum blog about the tea party versus Earth Day.

This page will share reports of estimated 800+ Tax Day Tea Party protest crowds nationwide.  This will be updated as such information comes to our attention.  We appreciate your assistance and patience as we try to document the national impact of these unique protests.  Refer also to other sources listed at right.
Please e-mail your most reliable crowd size estimates for whatever event you attend.  Links to published photos or videos which substantiate the crowd estimates are welcome - but please do not email the actual photos or videos to us.  Just help us to find and share such image links.
Our Tea Party News page for April will link to relevant videos, photos, news reports, websites and blog coverage of the Tax Day Tea Party protests.  Please send us relevant links to share, and help us to spread the word about SurgeUSA too.
Refer also to the official national Tax Day Tea Party Media Watch page for more coverage.
We have identified 800+ protests on April 15 so far, and our research is not yet complete.  This just includes the April 15 protests - and there have been dozens of other large protests already in many cities, plus many are being planned for future dates such as July 4.
Our Surge by State feature also lists planned and prior protests as well as other resources by state.
Don't forget to prepare for July 4, when more Tea Party protests are planned nationally on a "Learn the Constitution" theme related to the concepts of limited government and individual responsibility.
We encourage support of Memorial Day celebrations (not protests) to honor those individuals who have bravely defended our Constitution and the principles and values by which this country has become uniquely successful in this competitive and dangerous world.  That should fit the basic "Silent No More" theme of standing up for what we firmly believe, rather than attacking those who are now trying to change our country beyond the limits of our Constitution.
On the other hand, it is time to encourage the early "selection out" of many politicians for actions which are harmful to our country from a conservative perspective.  In that context, we are now accepting nominations for the bipartisan 2009 Specious American Politician Awards.
Refer also to our prior coverage of the February 27, 2009 Chicago Tea Party protests nationwide.  This included crowd estimates for many of the 40+ cities where events were organized by volunteers in just one week.  National crowd estimates ranged from 15,000 to 30,000 or more.  That didn't attract much media interest, but was far larger than the headline CPAC conference of Republicans that week.
Tax Day Tea Party crowd estimates will be featured here as they become available after April 15.
These are just preliminary estimates from 510 of the 845 cities where Tax Day Tea Party protests were confirmed.  Please send suggested additions or corrections for your city.  We also welcome suggested links to news reports, blogs, photos and videos which help to substantiate the estimates.  (Please do not inundate us with photo and video attachments by email, however - just the links.)

This total was updated as of 5pm CST May 23.  We're still trying to add up all 800+ Tea Parties!  We have added blank lines in the list below for known Tea Parties for which crowd estimates have not yet been found.  Thanks again for your patience as we try to compile a reliable open analysis at the same time as we work to share information about preparations for future Tea Party celebrations.

One suggestion is to stand up with our veterans on Memorial Day - not as a protest, but to thank them.  Others have suggested celebrating Flag Day - June 14.  We can get back to protesting with a suggested "Learn the Constitution" theme on July 4, as was already suggested some time ago for an Independence Day Tea Party celebration.

Let's make it clear this Memorial Day that we do not regard our veterans as potentially dangerous right-wing extremists!  We honor their service to our country - and we don't like being scorned by arrogant politicians, either.  Did you even notice what the Obama administration was preparing to do to veterans health benefits recently?  They finally backed down under pressure about it.
