September 2, 2009 - If you doubt what Daniel Hannan has been saying
about the British health care system, have a look at this article -
Sentenced to Death on the NHS in the Daily Telegraph (UK)
Note the hundreds of comments, such as personal examples of end of life
care by the NHS / NICE bureaucrats.
Daniel Hannan, MEP, a British Tory (conservative) member of the European Parliament, recently
attracted attention in the UK and USA through his sharp criticism of the policies of British Prime
Minister Gordon Brown. This sounded remarkably similar to some of the concerns
which have been expressed by conservatives in America about the enormous "stimulus" and
spending
plans of the new Obama administration, including growth of government
such as the nationalization of health
care. He has also offered insights into the European approach
to the G20 summit and more global
regulation, and the importance of limited government in general, as
well as devolution of authority to the more local level for greater
accountability to the public, rather than greater centralization of
bureaucratic power..
His basic
premise is that the role of government should be limited. He also
comments on the National Health Service problems in the UK, and
politicians spending other people's money. He clearly admires many
of the principles of the US Constitution, and shares concern about the
rapid departure from it.
June 4, 2009 - Daniel Hannan's MEP Victory Speech - another
priceless shot at the Labour Party and British PM Gordon Brown,
including a whimsical quote adapted from Dr. Seuss
Here
is a further interview on May 19 on the Sean Hannity show on Fox News.
Once again, the criticism which he has leveled at Labour Party Prime
Minister Gordon Brown applies to Democratic leaders here.
Here
is a remarkable interview that he gave on the Sean Hannity Show on Fox
News on March 27, 2009. A longer interview with
Neil Cavuto follows below.
It
was a remarkable coincidence that his views attracted attention here
during the same week as news coverage of growing
"tea party" protests and the launch
of Mark Levin's book, "Liberty and Tyranny".
As
Daniel Hannen observed at the start of the above interview with
typically dry British wit, it is hard to imagine a more boring Google
search result than "speech to European Parliament", so it is clearly
remarkable that his statements have resonated with so many Americans so
quickly.
The
basic point is simple - you can't borrow and spend your way to
prosperity. Government growth is unproductive. There need to
be more productive jobs, not more government workers. A declining
number of productive people can't keep supporting a growing number of
unproductive ones.
The bold assertions by
government leaders about leading the country to greater prosperity ring
as hollow as the Soviet leaders who believed that only the power of the
state could solve the problems of the world. In fact, leaders in
China still believe this. For example, see
China challenges US global financial leadership in the
preparations for the G20 summit in
London.
Neil Cavuto of Fox News gave this commentary about
the future of Daniel Hannan on March 26
Here's the earlier March 24 interview segment with Daniel Hannan during
which Neil Cavuto of Fox News talked to him about "the shout heard round
the world"
Daniel Hannan also appeared on the Glenn Beck show on Fox News on March
25. As Glenn observed at the end - "Please defect. Come over
here. We need more like you." Note the comments at the end
about the difference between the "We the people" Jeffersonian ideals of
the Declaration of Independence and the opening of the Treaty of Rome
which eventually led to the European Union.
Here
is the original speech by Daniel Hannan to the European Parliament which
has attracted over 1.4 million views on YouTube (as of 3/29)
Here
is Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan facing some scrutiny for a few
elements of his speech on British Channel 4, including direct criticism
by a Labour Party supporter. One of the key points is that,
despite the attention his speech quickly attracted through Twitter and
YouTube to "go viral" on the Internet and even attract attention in the
USA, it was largely ignored by the official BBC news.
Daniel Hannan is also the author of a book - The Plan: Twelve Months to
Renew Britain.
