State Finance Directors Warn of More Trouble Ahead - Comment:
Watch how dependent the states will become as the stimulus money runs
out without economic recovery yet. Meanwhile, new federal mandates
(health care, education, etc.) will create even more budget pressures,
as will unfunded liabilities for state employee benefits. |

| Many
states are facing budget crises, forcing them to make cuts (and seek federal
bailout money, which risks losing even more power to the federal
government). While companies quickly shed thousands of employees when
the economy goes into a recession, government officials resist this and
insist that it is at times like these when their services are most
essential. All of them? Really? There's no room for cuts?
